چکیده

In the summer of 1997, larvae of the oriental beetle, Blitopertha orientalis, with milky disease were collected from a turf field in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Characteristic footprint-shaped sporangia containing a spore and a parasporal body were isolated from the larval hemolymph. Examination of the bacteriological characteristics of this strain revealed that it was unable to grow in 2% NaCl, was susceptible to vancomycin, and had two plasmids, of about 9.8 and 5.5 kb. The sequence of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene (16S rDNA) of this strain was more homologous with that of Paenibacillus (Bacillus) lentimorbus ATCC 14707 than those of the most famous, traditional American culture, Paenibacillus (Bacillus) popilliae ATCC 14706 and NRRL B-4081. From homology of the 16S rDNA, this strain was identified as P. lentimorbus, and named strain ‘Semadara’. The sequence of strain Semadara was highly homologous with those of three Japanese isolates of B. popilliae. Strain Semadara also infected four other scarabaeids: Anomala cuprea, Anomala rufocuprea, Phyllopertha diversa, and Popillia japonica. When second or third stadium larvae of each of the four scarabaeids were inoculated with sporangia of strain Semadara at a concentration of 1.5310 sporangia/cup, most of the larvae died 2–4 weeks after inoculation.

Pristionchus pacificus has been developed as a nematode satellite organism in evolutionary developmental biology. To place evolutionary developmental biology in a comprehensive evolutionary context, such studies have to be co...

Optimization of pheromone deployment for effective mating disruption of oriental beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in commercial blueberries.

Cost is a potential limiting factor in the adoption of mating disruption to control oriental beetle, Anomala orientalis (Waterhouse) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). A 3-yr study was conducted in 1-ha blueberry, Vaccinium corymbosum L., plots to test the possibility of lowering cost by reducing the number of point-source dispensers and pheromone [(Z)-7-tetradecen-2-one] concentrations, while maintai...

Report of fungal isolates and their efficacy against Rosaceous longhorn beetle, Osphranteria coerulescens (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae)

The Rosaceous longhorn beetle (RLHB), Osphranteria coerulescens Redtenbacher (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a significant pests of fruit orchard in Iran and it is costly to control it. During an ongoing project on natural enemies of O. coerulescens in Mashhad region, North East of Iran, two isolates of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) were isolated as natural pathogens on the larvae. The fungal isol...

Populations of Japanese beetle at sites in Michigan where Ovavesicula popilliae (Andreadis) was introduced in 1999 and 2000 were compared with nearby control sites from fall of 2005 through spring of 2008. Percent infection byO. popilliae andwinter mortality of Japanese beetle were determined by sampling larvae in October and April from 12 golf holes on six courses in southeast Michigan and eig...
